Many people have the dream of owning their own home based business. Chances are you re one of them and who can blame you? With your own home based business, you can work or choose not to work when you want. You can also choose who you work with. You re not forced to be gathered with people you wouldn t normally associate with like you re forced to do day in and day out at your job. You can set up your office the way you want it and wouldn t be cramped into some tiny cubicle or have to stay on the same line/conveyor belt at the factory. The reasons you or anyone might want a home based business are numerous and too lengthy to go into here. Suffice it to say, it s a dream of many-but most never take the time to find out if they have what it takes to run a successful home based business. what does it take to be a success? You need the right skill set or the right tools at your disposal. You need a home based business money making guide and I m going to present an outline for you here. First of all, most people starting a home based business don t know how to schedule themselves. In others words they don t plan out a work day and it s been said many times, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”. Not planning can lead to two major problems for the home based business worker, under- working or overworking. Let s start with underworking. Every sales letter on the web on making money from home tries to sell you on the idea that with little or even no effort, you ll be raking in cash in no time flat. So unfortunately, many think that with just 20 minutes a day—they ll be raking in millions or at least hundreds of thousands of dollars. Come on let s be real. First of all, this is a home based BUSINESS and it has to be treated as a BUSINESS just like it was a store, landscaping service or kiosk at a mall. On top of that it s YOUR home based business, so do yourself a favor upfront and make a pact with yourself to put a concentrated effort to get results by actually doing what s required to be successful. Another problem with underworking a home based business is what I ll call the “distraction faction”. Let s say you have a specific task like writing an article or putting something up on auction at eBay to do. You get set at the computer to start, but an message notification pops up and you ve received an e-mail from someone you wanted to hear from. You go to your e-mail client to read the message, then notice that there s alot of spam/clutter e-mails, so you start deleting them and eventually get to the message you came for. Inside the e-mail, the sender tells you about the latest gadget/software that s going to make your online business soar with breakneck speed. You have to check it out, so your click the link and the sales page. The sales page is lengthy, but you need to read every word to be sure you understand that what the product says it does—it actually does. You finish the page, but hesitate before hitting the buy now buttom. You decide to google the product and see the reviews on it. All the reviews are positive, so you come back to the sales page and re-read the bullet points that you were really interested in, then decide to purchase. You now have to download and save the product and you re so excited about this new tool, you have to read about how it works. You read the instructions and decide you ll test it out…see what s happened. You ve just spent half your day on something nowhere near the task you set out with. Let s look at overworking. Some folks just don t know when to stop and that can be just as damaging as underworking. When you start a home based business, your instinct is probably go until you can t go anymore, so you can see results faster. Great idea in theory, but what if you re still working your regular job and you re trying to do this home business on the side. You re burning the candle at both ends and have no downtime. Burnout will hit you like a brick. Here s the workaround for both problems. Plan your day with discipline and be specific. Write down the task(s) you want to accomplish each day and the time you will dedicate for each task. Don t forget to include your time for family, exercise and for relaxation as well. The goal is to create a certain lifestyle after all, don t forget the reasons you wanted a home based business in the first place. When writing your tasks down, focus and specify. A statement like “work on the 123 project” is simply too vague. How exactly do you “work” on something and what do you hope to accomplish? Your plan needs to have an ending or result point. A better way of planning tasks would be to write, “Place 3 new items on eBay before 9:00PM” or “write a snorkeling article for page 2 of the website after dinner”. Notice the difference? You could “work on” that project for years on end and still not be completed, but when you “write the article on blank,” you ve accomplished a goal and you know you re done when you type or paste in your signature. You have to be realistic when you plan your day. If you re still working your regular job, be sure and place that time into your schedule and your commute to and from work. Also, if you have a 4 task to complete, don t try to schedule it into one hour. It ll never happen. Break big tasks down into smaller times and you ll be able to schedule your business time better. Completing smaller, more defined task will give you a better sense of completion and in turn you ll get a lot more done. I know multi-tasking is a huge buzzword now, but don t do it. Corporations use multi-tasking because they can get more bang for their buck by having you do 2-3 jobs and just pay one salary. Let s face it they invented it. It s a leading killer of productivity. Strive to schedule one project at a time. It s OK to work on more than one project a day, but you should not work on more than one project at a time. You can t serve two masters at the same time. Put your undivided attention on one project. Once that task is completed, you can then move onto another task in the project or onto another project. Since this is a home based business, you ll have to be flexible in your scheduling. It s inevitable that there will be distractions. There are distractions in your everyday work. Do you really think they won t happen at your home? While you are trying to finish your brand new idea, someone will knock at the door and need their car jump started or the toilet will start leaking, etc. there are always going to be things you didn t plan for, so give yourself a little cushion in the schedule. Plan out the tasks you want to get done, but overestimate on the time it ll take to finish. this will be difficult to judge when starting out, but you ll soon see a recurring set of tasks and can plan accordingly. A good rule of thumb is to over- estimate by 10% and keep some tasks on deck. The on deck tasks should be things you want to get finished soon, but aren t on that days schedule. If you happen to complete all your tasks, it s a bonus and you could finish another project quickly. Be prepared for some days where you just won t finish what you ve scheduled. This happens to everyone. What you ll need to do is adjust the following days schedule to include the missed task(s). don t get discouraged that one or two things didn t get completed as planned. it will all work out in time. However, if you see that you re regularly missing your own deadlines, you ll need to readjust and reevaluate your scheduling. Ask yourself are you realistically alloting time for your task(s) and when you discover you aren t—adjust and move on. These are just a few tips I discovered that will help you get your work done and move you closer to realizing your dreams with a home based business. As you accomplish your goals, you ll feel successful and in turn you ll BE successful. about the Author: Jason S.
